Why Men Propose

There seems to be some mystery as to why men get married. TV and movies would have you believe that we all long for our single, free-wheeling days when we drank too much, ate fried food, and dated (see: slept with) young women of questionable moral fiber.

The truth is that men propose for a lot of the same reasons that women want to get married. Still confused? Here’s a quick list of some of the reasons men pop the question.

Stability
Men like stability in their lives just as much as women. When we find somebody that gives us that stability we’re not quick to let it go.

Companionship
While it’s easy to argue that women are more social creatures than men, that doesn’t mean that men like to be alone all the time. Having somebody to share your day with besides the dog is a nice change of pace after years of coming home to an empty place.

Finances
Money, no matter what they say, makes the world go round. While we as men may, on average, earn more for the same job, that doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy having more money to work with. A partner with a good job allows us, and them, to indulge more in our hobbies and leisure pursuits instead of just paying the bills and squeaking by.

Age
If you’ve seen the Lethal Weapon movies, you’re familiar with the character of Murtaugh. His tag line of “I’m too old for this sh*t” applies to most situations, including relationships. At a certain point in our lives, typically sometime around our late 20’s to early 30’s, men realize that we’re too old to be going out to bars trying to pick up women. Settling down with somebody sounds less like death and more like a great way to spend the next 50 years of our lives.

Family
Believe it or not ladies, most of us want to be fathers. We like kids, not only because they’re great for picking up girls (sorry, it’s true), but because we like to know that a small piece of us will live on after we’re gone.

Love
Yeah, I said it. While we may try to hide it, we do in fact love you. I mean come on, a lifetime of Journey albums can’t be complete fiction. If you love something you don’t want to let it go, so that’s why we get down on one knee and pull out that diamond ring that so many of you have been dreaming of from the moment you had your first crush on a boy.
